Information for GP Practices SCOOP is a multi-site randomised controlled trial which aims to demonstrate whether a community-based screening programme for osteoporosis reduces the incidence of fractures, and is cost-effective, in older women. In order to answer this question, at least 11,600 women from seven study sites will be randomly allocated to receive either questionnaire-based screening (with bone density measurement by DEXA in selected participants), or standard care. Those participants identified as being at high risk of fracture will be invited to consult their GP and offered treatment to help prevent fracture. Follow-up will take place over 5 years with self-report fracture questionnaires and objective searches of fracture data.
